(BILLINGS, MT) – The number of grey wolves in the Rocky Mountain region has remained steady in spite of hunting legislation in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. An estimated 1,700 wolves are known to inhabit a six-state region, including nearly 700 in Idaho. Although there were vehement protests from wildlife activists when wolf hunting was approved in 2011, wolf numbers have only declined six percent. A new rule approved in Montana will allow ranchers to shoot wolves without a permit, but experts believe it will likely have a limited impact.
