The agency projects that 23 million returns will be on paper this year, down 7 percent from last year’s total of 25 million paper returns.

Of the 82 million returns filed through e-file this year, close to 49 million were prepared by a tax professional while 33 million individual returns were completed by do-it-yourselfers.

The IRS says it expects to receive a total of about 148 million individual income tax returns this year.

The government agency says it has processed more than 73 million refunds for taxpayers so far, with an average refund of $2,831.
