GETTY 41114 Gavel? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1397227448344Kuzma/Thinkstock(ROME) — An Italian court decision to recognize the marriage of a gay couple who wed in New York will be now challenged.

Earlier this week, a judge in the Tuscan city of Grosseto ordered the city council to legally recognize the union of two men who two tied the knot in New York in 2012.

Italian gay rights celebrated the decision as groundbreaking.

Still, the Vatican’s powerful Italian Bishops Conference denounced the decision, saying marriage between anyone else but a man and a woman is “dangerous” and “jumping the gun.”

The town’s chief prosecutor says that because same-sex unions are not legally acknowledged in Italy, he will appeal.

The Grosseto city council has backed the ruling, however, its mayor called the recognition of gay unions “historic” in Italy.
