In remarks at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on the campus of Texas A&M University to mark the 25th anniversary of his father’s first and only term in the White House, Bush spoke of his possible interest in running for national office by saying it will depend on whether he can avert “the vortex of a mud fight” to present a “hopeful” message.

The campaign Bush would like to see is one with candidates “who have a vision that is bigger and broader, and candidates that are organized around winning the election, not making points,” adding, “Campaigns ought to be about listening and learning and getting better.”

Whether that’s even possible — given the vitriol that characterizes modern elections — may be difficult to ascertain, especially regarding hot-button issues such as health care, abortion rights and immigration reform.

Education is another of Bush’s top priorities but his Common Core program setting standards for kindergarten through grade 12 children has not enamored many Republicans.

Meanwhile, Bush also said family considerations would factor into his decision to run for president. With a father and brother who’ve already served three terms, there are concerns within his own party that the country might not want a third Bush administration.
