The 80-year-old comedienne was talking to the Today show co-hosts Tuesday about her living arrangements in a guestroom at her daughter Melissa’s home when she declared, “Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space.”

Lawyers for two of the women, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, called the “unfortunate comparison” both “shocking and disappointing” and demanded an apology.

According to TMZ, Rivers refused and said of the women, “They got to live rent free for more than a decade.”

Rivers said of the women, which also included Michele Knight, “One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They’re ok. I bet you within three years one of them will be on Dancing with the Stars.”

Furthermore, the comic said her comedic colleagues often make fun of tragedies like the sinking of the Titanic and the Holocaust.

“The TV the guy [captor Ariel Castro] gave them must not have had SNL,” Rivers said.
