(NEW YORK) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Clippers owner Donald Sterling from the NBA on Tuesday.

The ban comes after audio surfaced this weekend where Sterling is heard making racial remarks towards minorities and players.

“Effective immediately, I’m a banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers organization or the NBA,” Silver said.

“Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices,” Silver continued.  “He may not be present at any Clippers facility and he may not participate in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team.”

Sterling was also fined $2.5 million — the maximum amount under the NBA constitution. He will also be forced to sell his stake in the Clippers organization.

“Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life,” Hall of Famer Magic Johnson tweeted following the news.

Silver had a forensic expert review the recording and found no evidence it was altered and confirmed Sterling’s voice.  Sterling also admitted it was indeed his voice on the audio recording.

The Clippers will host the Warriors Tuesday night at the Staples Center in Game 5 of their playoff series.
