NTSB Investigates Possible Close Call Between Passenger Planes

Stockbyte/Thinkstock(NEWARK, N.J.) — The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are looking into a possible close call between two passenger planes Thursday at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The aircrafts reportedly came within 500 feet of each other as one plane was taking off and the other was landing, sources tell ABC News. The estimation is still preliminary as radar data continues to be investigated.
United Airlines says they are working with Newark Liberty Air Traffic Control to review the situation involving Express Jet Airlines.
In a statement, the FAA explains it is investigating “a possible loss of separation” between the planes that occurred around 3 p.m. on Thursday. United Flight 29, a Boeing 737, was landing from San Francisco, while the Express Jet Flight 4100, an Embraer E145, was departing to Memphis.
While the number of flights has increased, the rates of such close calls is actually declining, the FAA tells ABC News.
