However, it’s not known how many people who have signed up have paid their premiums, nor how many of those people were previously uninsured. Millions of people lost their health insurance when the Affordable Care Act went into effect.

At midnight EST, the HealthCare.gov website will go offline for maintenance, according to an official from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The beleaguered site, which suffered from crashes as the deadline approached, is expected to relaunch Tuesday morning.

The last-minute signups on Monday are for health care effective May 1, allowing the government time to clear the expected backlog. Those who signed up must also pay their premium.
