Pirates Will Place Closer Jason Grilli on DL
Published at(ST. LOUIS) — The Pittsburgh Pirates will place closer Jason Grilli on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left oblique muscle.
The Pirates tried sending the 37-year-old to the DL on Friday but procedural errors forced the team to wait until Saturday.
Grilli, an All-Star last season, has made eight appearances for Pittsburgh this season. During that time he’s blown three of his seven save opportunities and has a 4.50 ERA.
The Pirates will call up right-hander Jared Hughes to take Grilli’s roster spot.
It’s expected Mark Melancon will take over the closer duties with Grilli out, although lefty Tony Watson also might be given a chance.
