Stocks Edge Higher After Roller-Coaster Session
Published at | Updated at(NEW YORK) — U.S. stocks were up and down for most of Wednesday’s session but managed to rally for a fourth straight day.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 40 points at 16,573.00. The Nasdaq Composite rose 8 points to 4,276.46. The S&P added 5 points to close at 1,890.90.
An encouraging sign for job seekers: a private survey by payroll processor ADP says U.S. companies hired at a rapid pace last month, creating 191,000 jobs. That suggests the job market’s recovering from a brutal winter.
The report is considered by many analysts to be a good indication of what the government’s monthly jobs numbers will look like. Those figures are due out on Friday.
