The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 146 points to close the session at 16,173.24. The S&P finished at 1,830.61, up about 15 points. The Nasdaq Composite added 22 points, ending at 4,022.69.

Meanwhile, General Motors is shaking up its management. A spokesman says it is not the result of a string of recalls and federal investigations. Rather, the changes are part of CEO Mary Barra’s effort to build her own team.

The automaker announced Monday that John J. Quattrone would replace Melissa A. Howell at Sr. Vice President of Global Human Resources.  Selim Bingol, Sr. Vice President of Global Communications and Public Policy, is also leaving the company. According to a statement, Howell and Bingol are both leaving GM “to pursue other interests.”
