The move to Plano means jobs are on the way for Texas but thousands will be taken from Torrance, Calif.

“That will include upwards of 4,000 people that are here in Torrance,” said Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto.

“The fact that they’re leaving, and taking a lot of citizens and residents possibly to Texas, we’re very disappointed with that cause a lot of those people are part of our families,” he added.

Toyota said in a statement Monday that its three separate North American headquarters for manufacturing, sales and marketing, and corporate operations, as well as its North American finance arm, will be relocating to Plano.

The moves will begin with small groups this summer but the majority of employees won’t be heading to Texas until the new headquarters is completed in late 2016 or early 2017.

“With our major North American business affiliates and leaders together in one location for the first time, we will be better equipped to speed decision making, share best practices, and leverage the combined strength of our employees. This, in turn, will strengthen our ability to put customers first and to continue making great products that exceed their expectations,” said Jim Lentz, the CEO of Toyota North America.

“This is the most significant change we’ve made to our North American operations in the past 50 years, and we are excited for what the future holds,” Lentz added.
