The recall affects 27 models and includes issues with seat rails, air bag cables, engine starters, steering column brackets and windshield wiper motors.

So far, Toyota says no injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of these defects.

In the U.S. alone, approximately 1.3 million vehicles — including some Corolla, Matrix, Highlander, Tacoma, RAV4 and Yaris models — need to have a spiral cable replaced.

“The driver’s airbag module in the involved vehicles is attached to a spiral cable assembly with electrical connections that could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned. If this occurs, the air bag warning lamp will illuminate. In addition, the driver’s air bag could become deactivated, causing it to not deploy in the event of a crash,” Toyota says in a statement.

Another recall involving the seat rails is also affecting 472,500 vehicles in the U.S. The models impacted include the Yaris and Scion xD.

The Japanese automaker says the seat rails in these vehicles could break, causing the seat to not lock into the adjusted position. The company adds, “If the vehicle is operated with a broken seat rail spring, the seat could move in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant.”
