According to the IIHS, the test “replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole” at 40 miles an hour.

After putting nine midsize SUVs to the test, only the Equinox and Terrain managed to earn a rating of “good” — the Institute’s highest score — qualifying both vehicles as a “Top Safety Pick Plus.” The Toyota Highlander, which scored the second highest rating of “acceptable,” also qualifies for the title of “Top Safety Pick Plus.”

On the bottom of the list was the Honda Pilot, which earned a “poor” rating.
