Nene added 20 points as the fifth-seeded Wizards advanced in the postseason for just the third time since the 1970s.

“It just shows our continued growth,” guard Bradley Beal said after scoring 17 points in the victory. “We played great basketball in this series and we can only continue to get better and better.”

The game was tied at 41 at the half, but the Wizards built up a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and hung on down the stretch.

Jimmy Butler and Kirk Hinrich each scored 16 points for the Bulls, who won 48 games this season despite losing Derrick Rose to a season-ending knee injury and trading Luol Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers before the All-Star break.

“It is real disappointing,” forward Taj Gibson said. “We put so much work into the season, came out of countless holes.”

Washington advances to play either the Atlanta Hawks or the Indiana Pacers in the second round.
