Could Hugh Jackman Be Hanging Up His Wolverine Claws?
(NEW YORK) -- The X-Men character Wolverine may be almost impossible to kill, but Hugh Jackman's days playing the character may be numbered.
In an interview with SFX magazine, Jackman says technically, he's not set to play the razor-clawed mutant after a sequel to The Wolverine -- but even his participation in that film is not yet set. "I haven't 'signed on' signed on," Jackman reveals. "I'm genuinely at that point where unless it's better than the last one I'm not going to do it."
When the next X-Men film, Days of Future Past, opens later this month, it will be Jackman's seventh appearance as the character, including a two-word cameo in 2011's X-Men: First Class, and two stand-alone films. The latter, James Mangold's 2013 film The Wolverine, was far better received than its predecessor, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but Jackman says a third "has to" be better than the second one for him to get involved. "I can still see where we can improve on the last one...I don’t want to get into specifics, because it just upsets people, but there are certain parts of that story where I felt we were predictable."
The Oscar-nominated actor says, "If I did another one I'm 99.9 percent sure it would be the last."
Meanwhile, in an interview airing Friday evening on BBC1's The Graham Norton Show, Jackman reportedly revealed a good reason to hang up his claws for good: he nearly castrated himself with them during a nude scene on the set of The Wolverine. "There was a very intense first scene and I insisted on a closed set...I ran around the corner and all the female members of the crew were gathered there," the 45-year-old actor recalled. "I tried to cover myself and cut my inner thigh...The metal claws had to go," he laughed, saying plastic replicas were used from then on. "You can't have bits and pieces flying off."
Days of Future Past, which also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, among others, opens May 23.
