Dolphins Punish Don Jones for Negative Tweets About Michael Sam
(MIAMI) -- While many are welcoming newly drafted St. Louis Ram Michael Sam into the NFL, Miami Dolphins cornerback Don Jones is being punished by the team for his negative tweets following Sam getting drafted.
After Sam was drafted, Jones tweeted "OMG" and "horrible." He later deleted the tweets.
Sam, who is the NFL's first openly gay player, was drafted by the Rams in the seventh round.
For his actions, the team has fined Jones an undisclosed amount of money and have excused him from the team until he finishes educational training.
Jones later apologized for his comments.
"I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media," Jones said. "I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment."
"I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team that I wish him all the best in his NFL career," he continued.
Jones is entering his second season with the Dolphins, and made 10 tackles last season during his rookie year.
