Machado Returns to Orioles’ Lineup
(BALTIMORE) -- The Baltimore Orioles activated third baseman Manny Machado from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Stephen Lombardozzi to Triple-A Norfolk Thursday.
The 21-year-old Machado, who hadn't played in a major league game since suffering a season ending knee injury Sept. 23 of last year, played in the second game of the Orioles' doubleheader against Pittsburgh Thursday, going 0-for-5 at the plate.
"Manny wasn't going to play 18 innings (his) first day back from rehab," Orioles skipper Buck Showalter said of Machado. "I have my reasons, and talking to Manny, I don't want to see him play the first game, sit around for a long time and then be asked to come into a game, potentially the second game.
"I made sure that he knew we weren't going to play him 18 innings. I just don't think that's very smart."
The 6-foot-3 Machado won a Gold Glove and was an All-Star last season, hitting .314 with 14 home runs and 71 RBIs.
