McMurray Wins Sprint Cup All-Star Showdown
(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) -- Jamie McMurray picked up a huge paycheck on Saturday, winning the $1 million Sprint Cup All-Star showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway. McMurray led a race-high 31 laps and edged out Carl Edwards on the final two laps following a restart.
It was the first All-Star victory for McMurray who had never led a lap in his prior seven appearances. His previous highest finish in the exhibition was eighth. A 40-1 underdog to win, the 37-year old was second for a restart with 10 laps remaining.
"As a kid, that is what you grew up wanting to do, is have a shootout like that and have a possibility to race for 10 laps," McMurray said. "(Edwards) got a little bit of a jump on me on the restart and I was able to hang on to his quarter panel, and when we kept entering Turn 1 and 3, I was like, `It is for a million bucks. If we wreck, it's not that big of a deal.'
McMurray passed Edwards with two laps remaining while Edwards fell back and finished fifth. Kevin Harvick took second while Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. rounded out the top five.
