Wieters was hoping to avoid a trip to the disabled list, but following an examination by Dr. James Andrews, the team and Wieters decided a trip was necessary.

Wieters was having a productive season so far, batting .308 with five homers and 18 RBIs.

The Orioles have Steve Clevenger and Caleb Joseph to fill the void at catcher while Wieters recovers.

The Orioles also activated Chris Davis on Sunday from the disabled list.  Davis went down on April 25 due to an oblique strain.

Davis was batting .250 with two homers and 13 RBIs in his first 22 games before being shut down.
