Report: Fewer Americans Taking Antibiotics to Treat Cold Symptoms

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The Centers for Disease Control is reporting a dramatic drop in the number of Americans taking antibiotics to treat common colds.

From 1995 to 2010, prescriptions for antibiotics to treat cold symptoms fell by 39%.

The CDC says this is in part thanks to its "Get Smart" campaign which aims to cut down on improper antibiotic use, as the overuse of antiobiotics can lead to the growth of drug-resistant superbugs.

Doctor Lauri Hicks with the CDC said, "We believe that about 50% of all antibiotic use, whether it's in hospitals or outpatient settings, is unnecessary or inappropriate."
