Rockies Turn Triple Play, Walk-Off Against San Diego

Justin Edmonds/Getty Images(DENVER, Colo.) -- On Sunday afternoon the Colorado Rockies did something that has only been done four times in the last 26 years: turn a triple play and hit a walk-off home run in the same game. Justin Morneau became just the second player during that span to be a part of both as the Rockies defeated San Diego 8-6 in 10 innings.

In the third inning, with runners on first and second, Carlos Quentin grounded to third baseman Nolan Arenado who stepped on the bag for the first out. He then fired to second baseman D.J. LeMahieu for a second out who fired on to Morneau at first. Quentin was called safe by first base umpire Manny Gonzalez, but second base umpire Seth Buckminster ruled that Seth Smith interfered with LeMahieu's throw and ruled Quentin out on baserunner interference.

"That was different than anything I've ever seen," Morneau said of the play.

Smith had homered in the first to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. However, his interference ignited Colorado who ended up scoring four runs in the home half of the third. The Rockies would eventually hold a 6-4 lead heading into the ninth, but closer LaTroy Hawkins gave up a game-tying, two-run homer to Everth Cabrera.

That set the stage for Morneau, who came up with two outs and one on in the bottom of the tenth. Morneau would take Dale Thayer deep to center for the game-winner, joining Milwaukee's Prince Fielder (2009) as the only other player to be involved in a triple play and hit a walk-off home run in the same game since 1988.

It was the first triple play turned by the Rockies since 2007 when shortstop Troy Tulowitzki converted an unassisted triple play against the Atlanta. The last time San Diego hit into a triple play was in 2012 at Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
