Search Suspended for Three Missing in Colorado Mudslide

Pablo Spencer(COLLBRAN, Colo.) -- The search for three people missing after an "unbelievably big" mudslide in Mesa County, Colo. was suspended after searchers determined the ground was unstable.

Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey and geologist Jon White held a press conference on Tuesday to update the public, saying that the ground is not stable enough to search, adding that they were unable to get equipment in, but that search and rescue resources were available if a safe area could be found. There is a likelihood that the three missing people will never be found, which is a "worst case scenario," White said.

The mudslide, which was called "unbelievably big" on Monday, created a depression 1,600 feet long, 300 feet wide at the top and 100 feet deep. White was concerned on Tuesday that the depression could fill up with water. A preliminary study showed that the area could be filled with 700 to 800 acre-feet of water -- the amount in approximately 395 Olympic-size swimming pools.
