Fire on Navajo Nation Grounds Near New Mexico-Arizona Border Grows Rapidly

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(CRYSTAL, N.M.) -- A wildfire near the Arizona-New Mexico border expanded rapidly on Tuesday, growing from about 500 acres to over 12,000 acres in one day.

Two Native American communities in the area have already been evacuated and more than 500 fire personnel have been working to battle the flames. Fire Information Officer Lorie Cook in Gallup, N.M., told ABC News that the wildfire is "very volatile," and that it is being driven by high winds.

The fire continues to burn in the Bowl Canyon area. According to the National Widlfire Coordinating Group, high winds are expected to continue on Wednesday, potentially causing more problems for fire crews attempting to contain the blaze.
