Germany Pounds Portugal Behind Muller’s Hat Trick

Michael Steele/Getty Images(SALVADOR, Brazil) -- Germany's Thomas Muller scored a hat trick and Portugal played a man down from the 38th minute on, as the Germans pounded the Portuguese in both teams' World Cup opener on Monday.

Muller got his day started in the 12th minute when he drilled a penalty kick to put the Germans up 1-0. Mats Hummels scored off of a corner kick from teammate Toni Kroos 20 minutes later.

Things got worse for Portugal when defenseman Pepe received a red card after elbowing Muller in the head and then getting in Muller's face.

Muller scored his remaining two goals during stoppage time at the end of the first half and then at the 78th minute.

Due to the red card, Pepe is automatically suspended from Portugal's game on June 22 against the United States.
