Group Seeks to Restore Grizzly Numbers
(IDAHO FALLS, ID) – The Center for Biological Diversity has filed a petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to promote better habitat for grizzly bears in the Intermountain West. Grizzly populations are strongest in the greater Yellowstone area, but the group says the federal government can do more. They’ve identified 110,000 acres including parts of the Grand Canyon and the Sierra Nevada mountains as reintroduction zones. Around 1,800 grizzlies currently roam the lower 48. That’s compared to an estimated 50,000 in the early 1800s.
