Marlins Call Up Top Pitching Prospect Andrew Heaney

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- The Miami Marlins are set to unveil their latest top prospect as they have called up pitcher Andrew Heaney, who will make his Major League debut Thursday against the New York Mets.

"It's surreal," Heaney said. "You think of how it might happen, and then it does, and it doesn't hit you until now when I'm in the park and looking out."

The 23-year-old Heaney was the ninth overall pick in the 2012 draft and has quickly rose up their minor league system.

Heaney went 7-2 in the minors this season with ERAs of 2.35 in Double-A and 2.74 in Triple-A.

Since the loss of staff ace Jose Fernandez, the Marlins have been trying to stabilize their starting rotation.

Despite injuries and youth, the Marlins find themselves right in the thick of the NL East race. Going into Tuesday night, the Marlins are 35-34 and are just one game back of the Atlanta Braves for the division lead.

To make room for Heaney, the team designated pitcher Randy Wolf for assignment.
