NASA Beams High-Definition Video from Space Station to Earth
(NEW YORK) -- NASA was able to successfully beam a high-definition video from the International Space Station to Earth on Thursday using new laser technology.
According to a NASA press release, the transmission, which included a video message saying "Hello, World!" traveled 260 miles via the Optical Payload for Lasercomm Science device, which will allow the space agency to test methods for communication with future spacecraft at a higher bandwidth than radio waves. "The International Space Station is a test bed for a host of technologies that are helping us increase our knowledge of how we operate in space and enable us to explore even farther into the solar system," Sam Scimemi, the director of the International Space Station division at NASA.
The technology uses focused laser energy to reach data rates 10 to 1,000 times higher than current space communications.
