Among the attendees was Vice President Joe Biden and a United States delegation that included Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., Ron Johnson, R-Wis. and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, Assistance Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and Ambassadors Dan Baer and Geoff Pyatt.

In his speech, the 48-year-old chocolate tycoon offered some concessions to Russian supporters in the east, saying he was not interested in war or revenge, the BBC News reports. Still, Poroshenko said that he had told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Crimea, annexed by Russia earlier in the year, would "always be Ukrainian."

Biden and Poroshenko spoke briefly on Saturday, with Biden offering the new president congratulations on his election win.
