Padres Place 2B Jedd Gyorko on 15-Day DL

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images(SAN DIEGO) -- The San Diego Padres placed second baseman Jedd Gyorko on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot on Friday.

Gyorko was brought up last season and signed a $35-million, six-year contract extension in April.

"It felt like there's stabbing in the heel," Gyorko said on Friday. "That feeling of walking on needles a little bit. … Every time you move you can feel it. It's one of the worst pains I've felt in my life."

Gyorko was batting .162 with five homers, 24 RBI's, and had just a .213 on base percentage.

"Jedd's a guy that never goes in the training room, he's kind of old-school like that," Padres manager Bud Black said. "When you see his name on the training room board it catches you by surprise."

Last season, the 25-year-old Gyorko led the team with 23 home runs in 125 games.

"This might be a good time for him to take a step back," Black said. "And when he does come back … Some things he and [hitting coach] Phil [Plantier] have been working on, especially lately, might be put into effect in a Minor League game so it can carry over to a big league game."

Left-hander Eric Stults was activated from the bereavement list and will take Gyorko's spot on the roster and start against the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
