Pakistan Airport Attacked by Terrorists

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(KARACHI, Pakistan) -- Militants managed to breach security at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan, Sunday night, leaving at least 18 security soldiers and other crew dead.

The bold assault in which the gunmen dressed as guards added to concerns that no heavily-protected installation in the country is safe from a terrorist attack.

Security forces finally managed to retake control of Pakistan's largest airport after five hours, killing all 10 attackers.

No group initially claimed responsibility for the airport assault, which investigators say was well coordinated. However by Monday, the Taliban issued a statement, saying, "We carried out this attack on the Karachi airport and it is a message to the Pakistani government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages."

Jinnah International is home to some of world's biggest airlines, including Emirates, Thai, Turkish, Qatar and Air China. More than three million passengers annually pass through the airport.
