Rangers Sign 1B Carlos Pena to Minor League Contract

Thinkstock(ARLINGTON, Texas) -- The Texas Rangers signed first baseman Carlos Pena to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock, the team announced on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Pena split last season between the Houston Astros and the Kansas City Royals, where he batted .207 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs. During his 13 year big league career, Pena has hit 25 or more homers in a season six times, including a career high 46 with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007.

Pena returns to the club that originally selected him with the 10th overall pick in the 1998 MLB draft. Since that time, he has played for the Rangers (2001), Oakland Athletics (2002), Detroit Tigers (2002-05), Boston Red Sox (2006), Rays (2007-10, 2012), Chicago Cubs (2011), Astros (2013) and Royals (2013).
