Sir Mix-A-Lot Goes Classical with Seattle Symphony Orchestra

Photo by Mat Hayward/Getty Images(SEATTLE) -- The Seattle Symphony Orchestra ditched its usual classical fare to take on a different kind of sound, one with a little bit of “back.”

This weekend the orchestra tried out its rendition of 90′s rap classic “Baby Got Back,” complete with Sir Mix-A-Lot and even some female patrons dancing on stage.

The piece is part of the “Sonic Evolution” series, which celebrates music from a range of eras with new compositions.

To pull off the sound composer Gabriel Prokofiev said he used a few unusual instruments in the piece, including “an acoustic ‘Scratcher’ (made by scratching a credit card against a metal guiro) [and] a ‘jackdaw’ (a friction drum that creates a frog like noise).”
