Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said that "following a gruelling election campaign," members of the African National Congress believed Zuma "needed to rest." Spokesperson Mac Maharaj said on Saturday that doctors were "satisfied" with Zuma's condition.

Zuma, 72, is expected to be well enough to hold a Cabinet strategy meeting next week. He was elected to a second term as president last month.
