Stocks Finish Up, S&P Hits All-Time High
(NEW YORK) -- There wasn’t much movement in the markets on Wednesday, but there was enough to give one of the indices a record-high close.
The S&P 500 gained just four points, but closed at an all-time high of 1,928. The Dow closed up 16 points and the Nasdaq finished 18 points higher on the day.
There are signs that the job market may be heading for a summer slowdown. The latest ADP report shows businesses created 179,000 jobs in May -- the weakest number in the past 4 months -- and it suggests Friday's government report might not meet expectations.
The latest Beige Book looks a lot greener. The Federal Reserve's survey of economic activity shows moderate growth in seven of the nation's 12 regions; the other five showed modest growth. One area of weakness is housing -- held back by a tight supply.
