Too Much TV Violence Stunts Male Maturity
(INDIANAPOLIS) -- Mom was right, guys. TV is rotting your brain.
According to an Indiana University School of Medicine study, young men who watch an abundance of violent television programs may be at risk of slowing down their rate of brain development, making them more immature than other males.
Lead author Dr. Tom Hummer says after observing 65 men ages 18-29 with normal IQs, those who reported watching more violent TV performed worse on tests involving attention and cognitive control.
The researchers also conducted MRI scans of the men's brains and discovered in those "scans of young men with higher violent television exposure, there was less volume of white matter connecting the frontal and parietal lobes, which can be a sign of less maturity in brain development."
Hummer and his team couldn't explain why violent TV seems to result in less white brain matter.
On the bright side, the overall amount of TV watching in general did not seem to affect performance on the various tests conducted with the men.
