According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Jose Rodrigo Arechiga-Gamboa arrived at San Diego International Airport at about 2 p.m. in the custody of U.S. Marshals and the Drug Enforcement Agency. He was booked into federal custody and is expected to be arraigned on Friday.

Arechiga-Gamboa was indicted in December 2013 and charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances intended for importation and conspiracy to import controlled substances. He was arrested on December 30, 2013, and the U.S. requested extradition in January 2014. A Dutch Court considered the request and approved the extradition on May 28.

Documents filed in support of Arechiga-Gamboa’s extradition indicate that he worked for the Sinaloa Cartel as a bodyguard and the leader of an enforcement group called “Los Antrax.” In this position, he also provided security for narcotics shipments. He allegedly later became a high-level leader in the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Department of Justice says that Arechiga-Gamboa underwent “significant plastic surgery” and attempted to alter his fingerprints, but was still caught. His identity was later confirmed using “forensic techniques.”
