The 37-year-old Iginla played last season with the Boston Bruins scoring 30 goals and dishing out 31 assists in 78 games, helping the Bruins reach the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal.

Iginla had interest in re-signing with Boston, but the Bruins have a shortage of salary-cap space.

“In the NHL it’s hard to pick which team is going to win, but you want to be on a contender, and I think at this stage in my career that is very important,” Iginla said to Sportsnet. “I know Boston, they have a great shot, a great team and they work very hard and they’re committed. Unfortunately, it didn’t end the way we wanted it to this year in Boston, but they’ll be right back there and have a great shot again and I realize that. But it wasn’t really a full option and Colorado, to me, is a young, dynamic team and they’re just getting better.”

Last season the Avalanche won the Central Division title but lost in the first round of the playoffs in seven games to the Minnesota Wild.

Iginla has played 17 NHL seasons split between Calgary, Pittsburgh, and Boston. He is a six-time All Star, who has scored 560 goals, tying him with Guy Lafleur for 24th on the NHL’s all-time top scorers list.
