(ST. LOUIS) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was put on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a torn ligament in his right thumb. The six-time All-Star is expected to undergo surgery on Friday and miss eight to 12 weeks.
Molina suffered the injury during the second inning of Wednesday’s 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, after he slid feet-first into third base.
In 83 games this season, Molina is batting .287 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs. He is a career .284 hitter with 96 homers and 576 RBIs.
To take Molina’s spot on the roster, the Cardinals recalled catcher Audry Perez from Triple-A Memphis.
