Cavaliers Reward Kyrie Irving with Five-Year Extension
Published at(NEW YORK) — Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers can put their fears to rest as All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving has agreed to sign a five-year extension with the team worth $90 million.
Irving had one more year left on his rookie deal, but he’s now locked up through the 2019-2020 season.
The 22-year-old Irving was the number one overall pick in the 2011 Draft after he spent just one season at Duke. The Cavaliers received the number one pick the season after Lebron James left to sign with the Miami Heat. Irving has been a good consolation prize for losing James.
The main issue with Irving is that he’s had trouble staying on the court during his young career. He’s also never led the team to more than 33 wins in a season.
In three seasons in the NBA, Irving is averaging 20.7 points and 5.8 assists per game.
