Dow Closes Above 17,000 for First Time Ever
Published at(NEW YORK) — For the first time in its history, the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Thursday finished the day above 17,000.
As the markets closed early for the July 4 holiday weekend, the Dow clocked in at 17,068 — an increase of 92 points.
The S&P 500 also hit a record high, climbing 10 points to end at 1,985, while the Nasdaq rose 28 points to finish at 4,486.
The record numbers were partly fueled by the better than expected jobs report.
Earlier on Thursday, the Labor Department reported that U.S. employers added 288,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.1 percent.
