IAEA Releases Statement on Nuclear Material Stolen in Iraq
Published at(BAGHDAD) — The International Atomic Energy Agency released a statement on Thursday related to the alleged seizure of nuclear material by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in near Mosul, Iraq.
The organizations says that it “is aware of the notification from Iraq and is in contact to seek further details.” Based on the preliminary information, the IAEA believes the nuclear material involved is “low-grade” and “would not present a significant safety, security or nuclear proliferation risk.”
Still, “any loss of regulatory control over nuclear and other radioactive materials is a cause for concern,” the IAEA admits.
The White House said on Wednesday night that they did not have independent confirmation regarding the stolen nuclear material.
