IndyCar Suspends Saturday Race, Will Run Two on Sunday

Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images(TORONTO) — Stubborn rainfall forced Verizon IndyCar officials to postpone the first race of the “2 in TO” doubleheader this weekend. Now, both races will be run on Sunday for either 65 laps or 80 minutes, whichever comes first.
“I think it would have been crazy to start the race today,” said IndyCar vice president Derrick Walker. “It doesn’t look like a lot of water, but it’s enough to make a difference. We went as late as we possibly could before we called it. We thought if we could get the race started, we could have held it off because the cars would blow the water away. But the visibility was just crazy.”
Mulitple attempts were made to begin the 85-lap event at the Honda Indy Toronto. The 23 cars did run 13 laps under caption but Ryan Briscoe and Will Power crashed. What followed was a more than two hour delay before race officials ultimately chose to postpone it all.
“You can’t see on the back straightaway, so it’s a safety issue,” said IndyCar Series championship leader Helio Castroneves. “There’s a difference between being brave and being stupid, and we’re about to cross that area.”
The first race of the day will be a rolling start, beginning at 10:30 a.m., with the second being a standing start at approximately 4:15 p.m.
