Israeli Cabinet Authorizes Callup of Reservists as Rockets Fly over Gaza

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(JERUSALEM) — The Israeli cabinet authorized the callup of up to 40,000 reservists in response to Hamas firing around 150 rockets into Israel on Tuesday. The move comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed his country would not rule out any type of operation following the attack.

Air raid sirens were heard throughout the city after the Israeli “Iron Dome” defense system intercepted a Hamas rocket Tuesday, Israeli television reported. The rocket was believed to be heading for Ben Gurion Airport, which would have made it the deepest strike by Palestinian militants to date.
Israel’s response, via air and sea, killed at least 25 Palestinians in Gaza, medical officials say.
The latest attacks follow the recent kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens, for which Netanyahu blamed Hamas. Later, a Palestinian teen was found burned to death in apparent retaliation.
