MLB Announces First Ambassador of Inclusion
Published at(MINNEAPOLIS) — Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that former outfielder Billy Bean will serve as the first ambassador of inclusion.
“We are proud to announce our hiring of former major leaguer Billy Bean as a consultant that will serve as Major League Baseball’s first ambassador of inclusion,” commissioner Bud Selig said at a news conference.
In that role, Bean will provide training and guidance related to efforts to support those in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community throughout baseball. He’ll work with teams throughout the majors and minor leagues.
Bean played in the majors from 1987-1989 and 1993-1995 with the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. After his playing career was over, Bean revealed that he is gay.
