The deal is worth $13 million, according to ESPN, with a club option for the 2017 season worth $7 million.

In 72 games this season with San Diego, Smith is batting .281 with 18 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 25 RBIs and 33 runs scored. The Padres acquired the 31-year-old from the Oakland Athletics this past off-season for righthanded pitcher Luke Gregerson.

In eight major league seasons with the Colorado Rockies (2007-11), A’s (2012-13) and Padres (2014), Smith has hit .266 with 82 homers and 298 RBIs.
