The body of Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir, 17, was found in a forest, charred and with signs of violence, according to the Israeli news website YNet. He was reportedly taken away while on his way to dawn prayers.

Politicians such as Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat condemned the murder.

“I am confident security forces will bring perpetrators to justice,” he wrote on Twitter, calling the death “barbaric.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch and asked that law enforcement work as quickly as possible to investigate the murder, according to an official statement.

“The Prime Minister calls on all sides not to take the law into their own hands and noted that Israel is a nation of laws and everyone must act according to the law,” the statement reads.

The teen’s death comes amid Israeli police clashes with several hundred Palestinians. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says Palestinians hurled stones at forces who responded with tear gas. Security was heightened around the city.
