Russia to Re-Open Spy Base in Cuba?
Published at(MOSCOW) — The Cold War may be rearing its head again just off the Florida coast.
Russia reportedly plans to re-open its massive Cold War era spy hub in Cuba.
The Russian newspaper Kommersant reports that during his visit to Havana last week, President Vladimir Putin inked a deal to re-establish the Lourdes signal intelligence center, which during its heyday was the largest Soviet signal interceptor, just a short hop from Florida.
Russia closed the base in 2001 amid financial woes and U.S. pressure — but amid fresh tensions
with the U.S., it may soon be back in business.
