(IDAHO FALLS, ID) – Potato prices are dropping significantly, and many eastern Idaho farmers are concerned. Local News 8 reports that spuds went for $8 or $9 per 100 pounds last year, and now it’s dropped to about $5, which is often less than the cost of production. Experts believe that could translate to more affordable prices for consumers, provided that retailers lower their bottom line to cut their losses. They also believe it could have something to do with schools and businesses eliminating starchy foods in an effort to reduce obesity rates.
