(ST. ANTHONY, ID) – A St. Anthony man was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star during a ceremony Monday. Staff Sgt. Don Mace, who passed away in 1986, spent nearly 40 months as a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II. Mace suffered extensive injuries during his time in captivity, and was wounded in combat in 1942. KIDK reports that Mace’s children accepted the medals on their father’s behalf from representatives of the Idaho National Guard. Mace’s son, Quinn, says his father was like many World War II vets, and only did what he had to do.
